Trina Bailey
Dr. Trina Bailey grew up on the west coast of Newfoundland in Cormack, a small farming community and she had wanted to be a veterinarian since she was a little girl. She completed a Bachelor of Science at Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS before completing her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) in 2000. After graduation, she worked in private practice before returning to the Atlantic Veterinary College as a clinical instructor and research assistant. This cemented her desire to pursue a surgical residency and this path started with a small animal rotating internship in 2002 at AVC.
Following her internship, Dr. Bailey and her family moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to complete a surgical residency and Master of Science degree which were completed in 2005. Dr. Bailey became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2007 and worked as a professor for 9 years at AVC in Prince Edward Island until 2014. During this time she worked in clinics and taught students and interns in lecture halls, laboratories and on clinical rotations. She enjoys teaching and was touched to be chosen for a clinical teaching award by the graduating students. Dr. Bailey started the first small animal surgical residency program at AVC and helped train 5 residents who are all currently board certified surgeons in locations around the world.
In 2014, she moved back to St. John’s to provide full time referral surgical services for the pets in her home province. The following year she, with the help of her husband, opened the Veterinary Specialty Centre of Newfoundland and Labrador (VSCNL) where she still helps patients in the surgery department. She continued to train interns and students from AVC at VSCNL, several of whom are currently enrolled in or have completed residency programs in several different specialties, including surgery,. She was recognized by Women of Influence, a national organization supporting Canadian female leaders in business, and was awarded the Staples Start-up Award in 2017. The Veterinary Specialty Centre of Newfoundland and Labrador was awarded the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association Practice of the Year Award in 2019 in recognition of the positive impact on patient care in bringing referral and emergency services to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
After 24 years in veterinary medicine, Dr. Bailey still loves to learn and stay current. She is a member of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and the Veterinary Interventional Radiology and Interventional Endoscopy Society. She is also working towards completing the Canine Certified Rehabilitation Practitioner (CCRP) program through the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee. She feels very strongly that total recovery from an injury or surgery requires continued care past the operating room and hospital stay. She has published several journal articles and has provided CE at local and national conferences.
When not at work, Dr. Bailey enjoys spending time with her husband, two children, and their menagerie of pets as well as enjoying her garden, the outdoors, and quilting.
